FAQs
The Aloha Spirit
Is Tropics really Hawaiian-owned? Yes! Tropics was founded to bring the authentic Aloha Spirit from the islands to the mountains of West Virginia. Our owners Brendan and Maria Burchfiel, Maria was born and raised in Hawaii, while Brendan moved there as a child when his father’s work with the CDC took the family to the islands and that heritage influences everything from our recipes to our hospitality.
What makes the food "Hawaiian Style"? Our menu features genuine island favorites you won't find anywhere else in WV, including Kalua Pork (slow-roasted), Ahi Poke, and our famous Kal Bi Short Ribs. We balance sweet, salty, and savory flavors just like you’d find at a backyard lū’au in O’ahu.
Dining & Drinks
What is a "Mai Tai" like at Tropics? We take our cocktails seriously. Our signature Mai Tai follows traditional island recipes—strong, refreshing, and topped with our signature dark rum float. It’s a vacation in a glass!
Do you offer traditional Hawaiian plate lunches? We do! Many of our entrees are served in the classic plate lunch style with "two scoops rice" and our house-made Hawaiian macaroni salad.
Island Entertainment
When do you have live music? In true island fashion, music is a huge part of our culture. We feature live music on our massive outdoor deck throughout the warmer months. Check our Events Calendar to see when local favorites or touring acts are playing.
Can I book a lū’au for my private event? We specialize in it! From pig roasts to tropical decor, we can transform your graduation, wedding, or corporate event into a full Hawaiian escape. Contact our Events Coordinator for details.
Visiting Us
Do I need to dress up? Only if you want to! We embrace the "island casual" vibe. Whether you’re in a suit or a Hawaiian shirt and flip-flops, you’re welcome here.
Is there outdoor seating? Yes, we have one of the largest outdoor patio and deck spaces in Morgantown, designed to make you feel like you’ve stepped off a plane and onto the islands. Our outdoor seating and Tiki bars are open for you to enjoy whenever the weather allows it. It’s the perfect spot to feel the island breeze right here in West Virginia.
Are dogs allowed? Yes! Your four-legged friends are more than welcome to join you on our outdoor deck and patio areas. We just ask that they remain leashed and well-behaved while you enjoy the Aloha spirit.
